Hollywood is full of sex scenes from hilarious hijinks to downright saucy antics, the film industry has seen it all.
In a bid to make filming as realistic as possible, film crews – and sometimes even the actors themselves – are forced to think of unique and creative ways to keep the magic alive.
Some have gone to great lengths – think vagina sponges, huge prop penises and a whole “genital room” for actors to choose from.

Olivia Colman played Queen Anne in the 2018 comedy The Favourite alongside Spiderman star Emma Stone and revealed that she used a rather unconventional prop during filming.
During an appearance on The Graham Norton Show, Colman shared her on set secret with the British host.
She admitted: “Emma Stone was worried about me though, because she had to finger me under the sheets. In order to avoid finding anything you shouldn’t have found…I asked the makeup department if they had a sponge.”
Olivia then hilariously recalled Emma’s reaction when she found the strange prop in a place where it shouldn’t have been.
Colman said: “I put a sponge there and I said: ‘It’s alright, there’s a barrier, you’ll be fine.’ It was a big wet sponge. She was going up my leg and her face was a picture when she reached it!”
Genital Room
Margot Robbie recently spoke about a “genital room” which was used on the set of The Wolf Of Wall Street.
The Australian beauty played Naomi Lapaglia in the 2013 blockbuster and chatted to radio hosts Fitzy and Wippa about her experience.
She said: “They have these things called merkins, which is like a wig for genitalia. I remember, for The Wolf Of Wall Street, there was an entire merkin room.”
Robbie then revealed that actors and actresses would “go in and pick one” before she admitted she was “fascinated” by the concept.
Prop Penis
During the 1997 movie Boogie Nights, Mark Whalberg played Dirk Diggler, a former busboy turned pornstar.
Whalberg had to use a foot long prosthetic penis for the role, the member which made the adult movie entertainer so famous in the first place.
Mark appeared on The Ellen DeGeneres Show back in 2022 and the chat show host grilled him on the giant prop.
She asked “whether it was true” that he still owned the prop and Mark’s hilarious answer had the audience reeling.
Whalberg explained: “Yes, yes. It’s in a safe, locked away. It’s not something I could leave out. All of a sudden my kids are looking for a spare phone charger and pull that thing out and go: ‘What the heck is this?’ It wouldn’t be a good look!”
Glue Issues
Dakota Johnson has said that underwear was stuck to her body to stop them falling off and revealing her modesty.
She spoke to Marie Claire about her experience filming with the sticky substance which was applied to “a sort of strapless thong”.
Johnson confirmed that it “wasn’t glue,” but it “was sticky, like a nipple pastie”.
Dakota revealed that despite the glue-like substance, it would eventually come off her body so the crew would have to resort to superglue to keep it in place.
Wee Bag
Fifty Shades of Grey is full of raunchy scenes and BDSM props, but one not-so glamorous prop was used on lead actor Jamie Dornan’s genitals.
He spoke on Jimmy Kimmel’s show about the “wee bag” which was applied to his penis and laughed about the hilarious double meaning.
Dornan explained: “Well, that’s an expression from where I’m from – a wee bag. But it doesn’t mean it’s actually wee in size. I wear quite a big bag!”
The guest, host and audience all saw the funny side as Jamie tried to maintain composure from his cheeky quip.
Almost Naked
Actress Sarah Silverman has previously spoken about how sex scenes were filmed in the days before intimacy co-ordinators.
Silverman admitted that there was little care given to how comfortable the actors were in the intimate setting.
While she was filming for one particular movie, Sarah said that her co-star was completely naked and there was only a small pair of underwear to separate them.
Things got so frisky that she claimed it “hurt to walk for days”.
She told The Mirror: “He [was] completely naked except for, not even the thickness of a sock. I can completely feel his boner. He’s not even a real actor, he’s an extra. And he’s smashing me and f***ing the sh** out of me in the scene.”
